Is this a trick question? In the original US flag there were 13 stars arranged in a circle. Each star represented one of the original 13 colonies. Then when more states were added to the union, the flag added more and more stars. Eventually it became our present flag, which has 50 stars (one for each of the 50 states), but has only 13 stripes (in honor of the original 13 colonies).

50 would be the answer if you question was: "How many starts are in the CURRENT U.S. flag?"
However, older flags, while scarce are still U.S. flags, and they contain smaller amounts of stars. So, forgive me for being a nit-picker and say anywhere from 13 - 50

There are 50stars and 13 stripes. The stars stand for the 50 states and the 13 original colonies.
