It started with a US policy of the government owning land, to keep it pristine for future generations. Ranchers are allowed to lease the land for almost nothing, so they can raise cattle or other animals. Two ranchers decided that they weren't happy with the 'preserving the land for future generations' thing, and deliberately started a big fire to wipe out the native flora, so they could plant invasive crops that their animals would like to eat more.



Those two ranchers are now serving time. But some of their relatives and friends took over some buildings in a wildlife refuge with guns (which is another felony), and have been issuing threats. The whole thing is the ranchers want all environmental regulations revoked and the land given to them for free. They've been claiming that they have popular support, but the opinion polls actually state that the huge majority of US residents think that they are terrorists.
